One week down

Friday:

One week down! I can’t believe I’m a 1/5 of the way done with this summer session. It’s been a good, but busy week. The initial culture shock differences are wearing off and I’ve settled into a routine, which makes me feel much more comfortable. We didn’t have any classes or activities this afternoon, so after lunch I was finally able to take the siesta of all siestas. I forced myself to get up around 6:30pm, but knew I could have stayed in bed all the way ‘til morning.

We finally got the keys to our kitchen yesterday (yahoooooo!!), so Angi and I went grocery shopping so we could have a stockpile of healthy vegetarian snackies for when the meals suck. The grocery store that is closest to us had a crummy selection of everything we were interested in, so we trekked across town to the Carrefour (safeway-ish store). As I was throwing things in my basket, I wasn’t really thinking of the trek back to the dorm, which is more than a mile. I was just thinking of all the yumminess that I was craving: PB (which cost almost $7 for a small jar!!) & J, whole wheat crackers & bread, olives (I got so used to eating them daily when Matt and I were traveling that I’ve been missing them!), CHEESE, fiber cereal (you really cannot have too much fiber, especially when traveling!), juice, coca-cola light, dried fruit, etc… The walk back was pretty miserable, but I think totally worth it!

My little cocina that I share with the room next to me (although I don't think she's figured out that we can get the keys yet... I've never met her, or I'd give here the heads up). I've got soy milk & cheese & diet coke & fruit & water in the fridge... I'm SO happy!!

We have the whole day free tomorrow and I almost don’t know what to do with myself. I do have some studying and rewriting of notes (I can’t study from messy notes!) and I’m just feeling this overwhelming tiredness creeping into my body. I think it’s both mental and physical exhaustion and I probably need to get some serious downtime and rest tomorrow. We’ve talked about going to the pool to cool off and relax a little. On Sunday, we have an excursion to Ávila & Alba de Tormes (don’t know much except Ávila is an old medieval town with an extremely high ratio of churches to people). I’ll take our good camera and do my best to capture some good pics and interesting stories & factoids. I’m definitely missing my sidekick, partner in crime & trip photographer (Matt)!!

My new favorite phrases are: tiquismiquis, which means obsessive about small details, finicky, OCD-ish (Anyone know someone like that!?!? Ha!) and chupa culo, which means brown noser (but literally means something a little different).
